Review of 3 Gastropubs in Portland, OR

Portland restaurant reviewThe Observatory became a reality to two young couples with years of restaurant experience in December of 2008.  An instant success in the Southeast Portland area, The Observatory created a unique atmosphere that menu that catered to everyone.

As their success grew, so did their desire to expand their restaurant.  That opportunity came when they created the Over and Out.  Over and Out is just down the hall and features the same delicious menu as The Observatory, however, it features pool, televisions and pinball.

Their bar menu offers an array of Draft Beers and Bottled Beer.  On Draft they offer many local favorites like Rainier but they also offer seasonal drafts and ciders.  Bottle include common beers like Coors Light, Budweiser or Bud Light and Stella Artois.  Oh, and they have Growlers To-Go.

The Observatory has a nice selection of wines.  Glass wines include the Badia Di Morrona Chianti DOCG from Italy with earthy undertones and red cherry fruit, full bodied with a soft finish.  The Heron Cabernet is produced by a female wine producer, full bodied fruit and black pepper balanced with oaky notes and tannins.  On the white wine side, Domain de Echardieres Sauv. They have a nice array of Signature Cocktails.  Try the Flu Shot with cardamom infused tachers scotch with ginger puree and lemon.  The Capricorn features vodka, strawberry puree and black peppercorn syrup with a salt and pint peppercorn rim.

You can sit in the bar and enjoy some starters like their signature Oregano Fry Bread which is a basil crème fraiche and tomato puree.  I always love Oysters on the Half Shell which come from the Nevor shellfish farms.  These delectable bites are served with a habanero-cilantro mignonette and blood orange champagne granita.

Understanding the growing interest craft beers this industrial-style brew pub offers a range of twelve rotating beers on tap.  Always keeping an eye out for unique flavors, they look for lagers, pale ales, sours and more.  They use only locally -brewed craft beers in their restaurant.

The craft beers vary on the alcohol by volume with the least with a four point three to the strongest with a nine point six.  The nine point six is called the Breakside Fourth Wave which is a Vienna-style lager flavored with Costa Rican coffee which is barrel aged in a Heaven Hill bourbon.Portland restaurant review

While you enjoy your craft beer why not order up some starters.  You will want to wash down the fire roasted jalapeno poppers that are stuffed with cheese and chorizo with a cool beer.  The nachos are available with chicken or pulled pork.  They melt cheddar and jack cheeses with pico de gallo, black beans, pickled jalapenos, guacamole, sour cream and green onions.  Not sure but the smoky blue waffle fries with bacon smothered in blue cheese sauce and smoky blue crumbles will go awesome with a cold craft beer.

For your main meal try the signature Breakside Burger which features one-half pound of juicy and tender American Kobe-style beef with a creamy center of smoky blue cheese and grilled to medium rare and topped with Oregon mushrooms and caramelized onions.  I think I would have to try the Pastrami Reuben with slow-cured pastrami with sauerkraut, swiss cheese, freshly shredded coleslaw and house-make thousand island dressing grilled on marble rye.  All of their sandwiches are served with waffle fries or cup of soup.  You can upgrade to sweet potato fries or salad for only a dollar and fifty cents.

With over four and one-half stars, I can see why over four hundred people have rated this place so favorable online.

Portland restaurant reviewWine and Growl is the last place I picked to review.  Wine and Growl was established in 2004 in Portland, OR.  Chef Forester Moher achieves an upscale selection of foods that are sourced locally using seasonal ingredients.  Complimented by Morgan White’s selection of craft beers, wines and specialty cocktails, you will be sure to have a meal that will not be easily forgot.

Their draft beers and ciders will vary in alcohol by volume.  For example their Matchless Mexican Gold Lager contains four percent versus the Cider Riot Blackberry Cider has six point nine percent.

Serving draft wine they have a wide selection of Rose’s, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.  If you prefer, you could order one of their creative house cocktails like the Sorbet Margarita which has tequila, sorbet, lime juice, agave and pinot noir sea salt.  The Second Word includes rum, lime juice, chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and Calabrian chili oil.

The menu is not extensive but offers a unique variety for any hungry stomach.  You could start out with a Cheese Board which features two or three cheeses, local honey, candied nuts, seasonal fruit and crostini. Portland restaurant review

For your Entrée try the Angel Hair Pasta with mussels, house made pasta, lardons, hatch chili sauce cotija and scallions.  For desert how about an old fashioned Crater lake Root Beer Float served in Vanilla ice cream.  Now I understand why they have racked up four and one half stars online.
